Pumping stations are utilized in residential plans wherein gravity sewers are not possible. These stations pump the sewage from an area up to the main sewer line, then gravity to the sewage treatment plant.

The MTSA encourages developers and planners to design residential plans without the implementation of pump station systems. MTSA policy is to limit the application of pumping stations where possible. Also see the Minimum Standards page.
