Pumping stations are utilized in areas where gravity flow is not possible. Collector sewers convey sewage to the station and the station pumps sewage up to a main sewer line, then gravity flow to the treatment plant.

The MTSA encourages designers, developers  and planners to utilize gravity flow in the design of sewer system extensions. MTSA’s policy is to limit the application of pumping stations.

If it is determined that pumping stations are required, design standards can be found in MTSA’s Minimum Standards.
